Who the Hell Isn't An Environmentalist?

If you are alive and a human being and you are living on this planet you are in an environment of one kind or another.

This is a fact. This is true. It's unarguable and no one can get away from it.

This makes every human being an environmentalist, the 'ist' meaning you are connected with your environment, you partake of it, you do things with it, and more closely defined you are concerned about your environment.

Now why the hell would anybody care about their environment? Well, you need food to eat to live, and most food comes directly or indirectly (through the 'food chain') from the SOIL. This is the ground you're standing or walking on right now or will stand on or walk on so it's directly connected with you and vice-versa. Your lungs need AIR to breathe or you don't survive And you need WATER to drink or you will not survive. These are facts and obviously they are very important, actually vital. Now anyone can see that depending on the condition or state these three things are in it can affect you. Depending on whether they are in good or poorer condition can affect your survival (health).

So unless a person is insane or incapable or irresponsible they actually should/do care about the environment around them. And we're not only talking about YOU personally. You're probably interested in those you love surviving too---your partner, children, good friends, etc. So this is not just about you is it. It's easy to see that air blows around the planet, waterways are quite connected all over the place, and these things can affect soil, so it even extends outward to people and places distant and what their environment is like and how they treat it since it can affect you and vice-versa.

None of this is rocket science.

Unfortunately the term 'environmentalist' has been used as some general label or term to insult or demean or degrade someone, it has a sort of stigma attached to it that it just has to do with a few people on the 'fringe' or some 'special' sector of society, some faddish movement or something. It's certainly true of course that you can find fanatical and nutbar environmentalists here and there. But that is true for every human activity on earth. There's always some in any group.

But EVERYONE is an environmentalist. I would say they could be broken down into a 'good' environmentalist or a 'bad' one. The 'good' environmentalist cares about the environment he lives in, is responsible for his environment because it is pro-survival to make sure it is in good condition and so will not negatively affect him or those around him; and the 'bad' environmentalist doesn't care, it can be in crap shape, he can be stupid about it, he can negate responsibility for it, about it, which also actually means he doesn't really care about those he loves or others around him either.

You ARE an environmentalist.
